In celebration of Black History month, last month, our Kidstudio: Mixed Media students (ages 4-7) learned about African-American artist: Beverly Buchanan. Beverly, a graduate of Bennett College here in Greensboro, is a sculpture artist who focuses on southern, localized architecture and is recognized for her Shack Sculptures and Drawings. Check out her work at

The students loved this lesson. It took us two weeks to complete the project. Like Beverly, we used wood scraps, paint, cardboard and many other miscelleaneous items to create these colorful shacks. The students went wild with their creativity!!! We had some say it was their "restaurant", or their "missile launching pad".

Gotta love children's imaginations!!!!!
